Bike storage looks like a style decision and is actually a fit decision. Three published numbers settle nearly every compatibility question, and every listing in our range carries all three. Understanding what they mean saves a return.

Load rating, and what it applies to

Load rating is the weight the rack is designed to carry. On a multi-bike stand it is usually quoted per slot, so a four-bike rack rated at 30kg does not mean 30kg in total. Where a listing is ambiguous, treat the figure as per bike and check the total separately.

Ratings include a safety margin, but that margin exists for dynamic loads — the bump as a bike is dropped into a cradle — rather than as spare capacity. Sizing to the rating rather than beyond it is the whole point of the number.

Weigh the bike you actually own

Published bike weights are usually for the smallest frame size without pedals, and rarely for the bike as you ride it. Racks, mudguards, a lock, a heavy tyre and a bottle cage together add a meaningful amount. On an e-bike the battery alone can be several kilograms.

Stand on a bathroom scale holding the bike and subtract your own weight. It takes a minute and it is the only figure that matters.

Tyre width: the most common mismatch

Cradles and hooks have a physical gap, and a tyre wider than that gap does not fit however hard you push. Road bikes at 25 to 32mm fit essentially everything. Hybrids and gravel bikes at 38 to 50mm fit most things. Mountain bikes at 2.4in are at the top of many racks’ range, and plus or fat tyres at 3in and above need a rack that explicitly says so.

Measure the widest point of the inflated tyre with a ruler rather than trusting the sidewall marking, which is a nominal size and often optimistic by a few millimetres.

Wheel size, and where it matters

For most storage, wheel diameter matters less than tyre width, because the cradle grips the tread rather than the rim. It becomes important at the extremes: 16in and 20in folding wheels can fall through cradles designed for 700c, and 29in wheels can foul the frame of a compact stand.

Kids’ bikes are the usual casualty. If a child’s bike shares the rack, check the lower end of the stated range as carefully as you would check the upper end for an adult bike.

Frame geometry and the hidden clash

Two numbers never appear on a specification but decide the fit anyway: how far the pedal sits from the wall when the bike hangs, and whether a sloping top tube leaves anywhere flat to rest. Full-suspension frames and step-through frames are the ones most likely to sit awkwardly in a frame-supported design.

Wheel-supported racks avoid the problem entirely, which is one reason we lean towards them for mixed households where one product has to take several very different bikes.

Mudguards, racks and bags

A rear pannier rack changes the balance of a bike hung by its front wheel and can foul a cradle designed for a bare wheel. Full mudguards can hit the arm of a horizontal hanger. Neither is a reason to avoid a product, but both are worth checking against the photograph before ordering.

Where a bike lives permanently loaded with a basket or a child seat, mention that when you ask us about fit. It changes the answer more often than people expect.

Reading a listing quickly

Our listings put capacity, load rating and maximum tyre width in the first lines of the specification, and state whether the rating is per bike or per rack. If a figure you need is missing, that is a question worth asking rather than assuming — the specification is what decides whether the thing works.

Everything on the shop page has these figures filled in. Where a manufacturer does not publish a number, we say so rather than inventing one.

A short checklist before you order

Weigh the heaviest bike as ridden. Measure the widest tyre. Note the wheel size range across all the bikes involved. Compare those three against the listing. If all three sit inside the range with a little room, the rack will fit — and if one of them is borderline, call the shop before ordering rather than after.

Where published figures and reality diverge

Two numbers on a bike are routinely optimistic. Tyre sidewall markings are nominal, so a tyre marked 2.35in can measure over 2.5in on a wide rim — and rim widths have grown considerably in recent years. Frame weights are quoted for the smallest size without pedals, which is rarely the bike in your hallway.

Both errors push in the same direction: the bike is wider and heavier than the paperwork suggests. Measuring the inflated tyre with a ruler and weighing the complete bike takes five minutes and removes the only two ways a correctly specified rack turns out not to fit.
